What If Your Doctor Tells You to Take Supplements?
Thinking critically and conversing respectfully about supplement recommendations
This post is from my previous newsletter, Food Psych Weekly.
This week’s question is from a reader named Leesa, and it’s related to my November 14 newsletter about supplements.
Leesa writes:
I just finished reading your post about supplements. While I’ve heard for many years that supplements [aren’t] properly regulated, I’ve also had medical providers recommend supplements. Just recently my PCP recommended that I take krill oil. She was not the first to do so, my ophthalmologist also recommended it in relation to my vitreous detachment. The PCP recommended it due to an increase in one of my liver enzymes. There are other supplements that I also take and were recommended by a healthcare provider. While I agree that we should not take supplements without some guidance I’m somewhat confused now after your post. Is there an appropriate time to take supplements? My already wavering faith in healthcare is now being dealt another blow. I’m not sure who I should trust about supplements.
