Writer and podcaster Amelia Hruby joins us to discuss the intersections in her processes of breaking up with social media and with diet culture, how being off the platforms has benefited both her mental health and her business, how to handle guilt over leaving, ways to get exposure to greater representation and body diversity without social media, and more.
Thank you for this episode! I am just getting started on building my eating psych coaching business and the question of how active I need to be on social media has really stressed me out. I personally avoid social media, even my super-curated feed, because it inevitably makes me feel anxious and insecure. But I have always assumed that I would need a strong presence there in order to build a client base. Your thoughts on creating content that has staying power really resonated and reframed the challenge for me.
I am relistening to this episode now. It's week one of Lent in my faith. During Lent, we give something up that's distancing us from God and our calling, giving back more, and spending more time with God, so for my give up, I chose social media.
I'm one week in today, and my body dysmorphia, ED thoughts and urges, and overall anxiety have quieted, making a very stressful week manageable. I wish we could wipe our algorithm and get a clean slate, especially for folks coming out of or in relapse. I can't understand why leaders on both sides hold Congressional hearings on these deadly harms and then do nothing beyond the X post. FEC reports would indicate tech company-affiliated PACs and 501(c)4 donations matter more.
However, I feel better knowing people and organizations advocating, educating, and modeling connected, flourishing life with limited/no SM. Thank you
Thanks for sharing, and I'm so glad this episode was helpful. I really wish Congress would act, too, and I appreciate people like Amelia for her work in modeling a different path ❤️
