I also wonder how people can speak extemporaneously (let alone authentically or intelligently) about a topic they haven't actually digested themselves.
Hi Christy. Thank you for writing and researching with integrity. The human voice, the use of critical thinking and the use of nuance get lost in AI generated content.
I am an OB clinical nursing instructor for BSN students. Use of AI in my students papers is definitetly an issue. Future and current health care professionals need to be able to distinguish facts from mis and disinformation. They also need to follow up their facts with proper research. They also need to be ethical in their decision making processes as they care for patients. I tell my students to trust their voice and that I want to hear their voice in their paper, not a bot. I emphasize that they will have peoples lives in their hands and that they must step up to a higher level than students pursuing other careers. If a fine arts student writes an AI generated paper nobodys life is at risk (no offense) but an RN student who writes an AI generated paper could literally kill someone because they do not know their stuff.
Thank you for writing this! I’d add that there are even more ethical problems with AI — namely the environmental impact and labor abuses of those who currently train and moderate AI systems.
Like a lot of things, I don’t think a shaming or blaming approach of this issue is helpful, so I appreciate how you let us in to your thought process.
It’s also nice not to read another breathless post about how AI is going to free us from all of society’s ills and allow us to ascend to a higher consciousness (or something). Honestly it feels similar to the “one universal cure” trope in wellness culture.
I was just asking my partner tonight whether AI might promote or lessen misinformation. This post was a good reminder that I shouldn’t always trust it. And for what it’s worth, I enjoy your “handprints.”
Thank you so much for this Christy. I have been feeling a lot of the same things about AI. I am so grateful to be able to keep reading your own voice and not some blend version of humanity. I think our toxic optimization culture is having a big moment with AI and it’s turning even more dangerous.
Thank you for this. You are so thoughtful on complex topics, one of the main reasons I prioritize your newsletter and feel like I always come away smarter and with a more nuanced understanding of things.
Amen! Thank you.
I feel the same way.

Agreed! Such a great point.

Yes, such a good point about the environmental and labor issues. And the “one universal cure” trope!

Thank you, Christy, for writing this important piece and for the effort, integrity, and voice that go into your work.

Thank you so much for this. I am really glad to find out you won't be using AI to write!
